At Straying Tales, content is ranked to help you discover the most relevant and engaging travel stories. Here is a transparent overview of how the algorithm works.
The number of likes an item receives is the most important factor in its ranking. However, recent likes count more than older ones — a like received today has roughly twice the impact of a like from 6 months ago. This continuous decay ensures that fresh, currently popular content naturally rises to the top.
Recently updated or created content receives a temporary visibility boost. Updates are rewarded for up to 30 days, and newly created content for up to 60 days. This helps newer stories get noticed even before they accumulate likes.
Complete, well-crafted content ranks higher. The algorithm rewards items that include descriptions, locations, photos, tags, and other enriching details. Each content type has its own quality criteria — for example, albums earn points for having multiple pages and a GPS location, while tips benefit from images.
Engagement beyond likes also contributes. Tips with active comment sections receive a small boost, and illustrations or layouts used by other creators gain additional points.
In short, the ranking algorithm combines likes (weighted by recency), freshness, quality, and community engagement into a single score. Likes remain the dominant factor — no content is manually boosted or hidden. The algorithm is automatic, deterministic, and applied equally to all content.
